Disowned by his father James, sent away to live with his grandmother 'Talkee Amy', a small-time smuggler in Kingston, he survives by his wits before joining the Navy as a gunner to gain passage to England, seeing action against the French. Barely 20, he marries Elizabeth Ryan in 1781. Unable to sign his name, he leaves his mark on the register.
